It’s been irking me for a while that some of the more complicated Chinese characters can be rendered illegible on this site when the font size is on the small side, so I set about cobbling together a Javascript-based text magnifier. Now, whenever you hover the mouse over some Chinese text, a nice tooltip-like box should appear displaying the characters writ large.

[Tested in current versions of Opera and Firefox, Windows XP.]

hooray! best part is, now you’ve implemented the magnifier, the actual characters appear in the text! (multiple browsers, multiple OSs, at home and work, previously just displayed ?? characters instead of chinese characters, just never got round to mentioning it. amazing how many times in my twisted version of reality you’ve been on “a visit to ??”, waxing lyrical about the joys of ?? etc. etc.]

Re #1: Don’t worry, it’s not very important. :)

Re #2: Gosh, no idea why adding a bit of Javascript would cause the characters to appear.

But for future reference you generally need to install the Chinese fonts since they’re not usually installed by default. On Windows-based machines you can do it via the Control Panel’s Regional and Language Options applet: just check “Install files for East Asian languages” on the Languages tab then spend three days hunting for your Windows CD. :)

You might have included some Chinese text in the post so we could have tested the magnifier (without having to go searching through other posts to find some which would clearly be far too much like hard work!)

Re #4: Yeah I thought about that, but decided it was far too much like hard work to think of some Chinese text to include. :P
