Fuddland
I’d never even heard of it before I moved into my new flat, but I have since discovered that many of the posher kitchens here come equipped with one of these: a crockery and cutlery sterilising [and drying] cabinet that uses ultraviolet light to kill germs.
Whilst the theory is sound, I’m dubious as to its effectiveness on anything other than glassware — surely any microscopic baddies lurking in cracks [or shadows] would be shielded from the radiation and carry on as normal?
I’ve survived almost a year here without any tummy-trouble whatsoever, so I think using this on a routine basis is simply a waste of electricity and gives a false sense of security. Having said that, it does look quite cool when all the other lights in the kitchen are off.

did you never even seen these at the dentist? seem to be less common here now, but when i was a kid the dentist’s assistant (dental nurse now i suppose?) always made a point of “cleaning by x-ray”.
wonder if she was joking? even as a (young) kid i knew full well the cleaner wasn’t based on x-rays.
presumably it must have been a joke. “miss jones, could you x-ray this patient please?” might have had odd results otherwise…

Re #1: Nope, I don’t remember any sort of cleaning equipment at my dentist … which is quite a worrying statement, come to think of it!
