National Day

Tomorrow [October 1st] is China’s National Day — a day to remember that China is a nationally a nation, that its borders spread nationally all the way around the nation and, notionally, beyond. It is celebrated by giving most of the country the whole week off, which means it’s time for another round of “Let’s all cram onto a train at the same time for twenty hours and see whose limbs can go numb the fastest”.

Being a little wiser than last time, I’ve not planned an excursion to somewhere far and wide, but have an idea of a couple of places I can get to by local bus, no more than a couple of hours away: far enough to get away from the city life of Sūzhōu (苏州), but not so far that I spend 20% of my time off travelling to and from my destination.

The exciting part this time will be the fact that I’m heading off on my own, so it will be entirely up to me to find places to stay and organise visits to local attractions. Must remember to pack my “I’m a clueless foreigner, please try to rip me off” hat…
