Běnxī Zoo

The local park has a small, free-of-charge zoo at its centre, and it’s utterly appalling. They have a lion, a tiger, a leopard, a camel [note the singular in all of these, for they have only one of each], a pack of monkeys, and four bears, as well as various birds and domestic animals such as horses.

For all but the monkeys, the cages are ridiculously small. All of the animals have mangy fur and appear underfed [however, the public are permitted to lean over the railings and feed them whatever they want]. The monkeys occupy a large “arena” with a couple of bare trees and a fake rock structure in the centre, and regularly have bottles and cigarette butts thrown at them by members of the public. The few staff that I saw didn’t seem to care.

I could go on and on about this, but I think the following movie of one of their bears — showing the classic signs of the depression and distress a captive, ill-treated animal can exhibit — will suffice.
