Fuddland
A very surreal teaching experience today: my students were reading aloud from a short play in the set text I have to teach them. The scene was: an English lesson, in which one of the students was Japanese, with phonetically-written dialogue [for example, “ev-a-ree-bluddi” instead of “everybody”, and “gud eva-ning” for “good evening”]. So I had Chinese students reading bad Japanese accents in English. Badly.
I was half-hoping that the students’ own accents would cancel out the forced pronunciations and the result would be perfect Queen’s English, but alas, they just sounded exactly the same as normal.
[The non-political correctness of the teaching material is nothing to do with me, I just do what I’m told. For now.]
