Right, I’m off to Argentina and Bolivia.

Not right now, though. Just over ten weeks to go, heading off for the entire month of November.

A friend of mine has been travelling around South America since April, and she was pestering me even before she left to go out and travel around with her for a while, so finally I relented, booking my tickets earlier this month.

After the initial excitement, I’m getting slightly trepidatious, worrying about the language barrier [no hablo español] and the rather high crime-rate in some of the major cities [Buenos Aires in particular, which is where I’m flying to and from].

As long as I can negotiate my way from Buenos Aires to La Paz in Bolivia, where my friend is staying, without incident or getting hopelessly lost, I should be fine. I’ve no real idea yet where I’ll stop off on my way to La Paz — the temptation is to try and cram as much as possible into the trip, but I know from experience that I’d rather see a few things at a leisurely pace than dash from one place to another, snapping as many photos as I can along the way. Perhaps I’ll just head straight to La Paz in one go, then enjoy the company of my friend rather than wandering around on my lonesome for a couple of weeks. I’m pretty sure we’re going to go camping off the beaten path somewhere, so I do hope those vaccinations work.

Someone is supposed to be lending me a guidebook which will help me figure out places to go and routes to take; in the meantime I need to dig out some old Learn Spanish books and tapes that I know are lying around somewhere at my Mum’s place — I’m not sure I’ll get away with just knowing “Two beers please!” like I did in Cancún.

May I recommend the wonderful “Teach Yourself Spanish” course (CD and book) for the basics (at least enough to get you out of a jam) I worked through it for about 1/2 an hour a day and managed to pick up - and retain - quite a bit of the language.

Should have added - I take it that you’ve read Meg meish’s absorbing tale of her journey to Bolivia? I reckon you’ll have a great time.

Re #1: Thanks, I shall look out for it. Better yet, I’ll put it on my Amazon Wishlist in time for my birthday, which may or may not be [but really is] exactly three weeks away. ;)

Re #2: Not for a while, I will have to revisit it, thanks for the reminder.
