Sometimes it’s hard to imagine recycling making any impact at all: we still have to have weekly visits from the dustbin men to empty the rubbish destined for a landfill site. However, I must admit to feeling a bit of a sense of self-satisfaction that, due to my can-crushing, cardboard/glass/paper-sorting, compost heap-making, avoiding-excessive-packaging endeavours, I found that I didn’t need to put my bin out this week because I’d not thrown out a single bag of rubbish since it was last emptied. And that includes a weekend involving three houseguests and copious amounts of bottled beer.

It almost makes up for leaving the oven door slightly ajar for fifteen minutes this evening in a pre-heating move gone quite wrong. Still, warmed the kitchen up a bit. And the living room. And the hallway…

We are the same, sort of.. we now have two wheelie bins - black one for rubbish, blue one for recyclable items. They are collected on alternate weeks and it’s usually the blue one that is full. That and our new boiler (when I don’t accidentally set it to stay on all night… ahem…) makes me feel I’m doing at least SOMETHING… ohh long life bulbs where possible, and nothing higher than 60W (unless it’s halogen). Every little bit and all that.

And don’t knock the “oven as heater” concept, it got us through last winter!

For some reason Croydon council seems to be trying its hardest to make it as difficult as possible to recycle but at least as far as my lot are concerned it’s merely slightly less convenient as recycling has been second-nature for as long as I can remember. I’ve had to stop composting though as I’ve run out of places to use/dispose of the stuff - one can only keep a pile of festering banana skins, egg-shells, teabags and peelings for so long without passing out from the fumes.*

I cycle to work most days now and I sold my nice big, gas-guzzling car** so like you say, swings and roundabouts, eh?

*I’m joking of course, it’s the fumes from the lethal sprays of solvent-based chemicals I use to mulch the stuff that make us dizzy.***

**In a move of utter selfishness and hypocrisy I’m deliberately planning a move back to the countryside so’s I can once again purchase a substantial, comfy, gas-guzzling motor.

***?

I tried to edit that comment but whatever magic-trickery you’re using decided unilaterally to laugh at me and poke itself in the eye.

Re #3: I do apologise. The comment-edit did go through but somehow I’d deleted the .cgi script which rebuilds the page and confirms things have updated. It’s back now and successfully tested.

re #5: ah, eddie rocks muchly in that advert. “or, maybe another can” seems to have become a bit of a catchphrase amongst cfg’s “gang” - 12 and 13 yr olds…
