For various reasons, whilst I live in a three-bedroom house on my own most of the time, sometimes my landlady and her husband will be staying here at weekends, or perhaps for a couple of weeks at a time, over Christmas for example. Due to this new and slightly unusual arrangement, we have agreed that I will continue to pay the same level of rent but from now on, she will pay all the bills instead of me [except for the TV licence and my broadband connection].

The question is this: whilst I am usually of the “put on another jumper” school of keeping-warm-and-saving-money [not to mention being absolutely loathe to use a tumble-drier in any but the most emergent of situations], now that my central-heating usage no longer directly affects my bank balance, is it morally wrong of me to whack up the heating full-blast for ten hours a day?

I see no moral dilemma here. Whack up the heating, put on a pair of shorts, a Hawaiian shirt and get making Margaritas.

Bonus points if you fill the house with sand and invite people round for a beach party.

no question about it david - if you don’t have to pay for it, use it. no moral dilemma at all.

just remember to put my invite to the beach party in the post along with graeme’s!

Re #1: That reminds me of a theory a friend of mine came up with. No matter what the dress code — black tie, smart casual, whatever — at any given party there will always be a man in a Hawaiian shirt. It seems to be true!

Now where’s that margarita mix…?

Re #3: You have to remember though that there will be a disproportionately high number of mathematicians at any given party you may attend which may influence this observation slightly (I speak as a knowledgeable Physics graduate on this one). Lets face it - it’s you in the shirt isn’t it?

;o)

Re #4: I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I’ve never even worn a Hawaiian shirt, let alone owned one. :P

Oh, and I should clarify that this entry was all rather tongue-in-cheek. :)

yes! It is incredibly wrong in a moral sense. You will burn in hell for doing it. Live with the cold, embrace it! Besides it keeps the mold down…

Re #7: Uh oh, the hubby’s onto me. I refer to you comment #6 [made just in the nick of time!]. :P

[Regarding the mold/temperature theory: how does that reconcile with the moldy lump of cheese I threw out this morning? ;)]

No way José - when I was at uni and didn’t pay the bills I used to leave my window open and have the heat on full power. This meant fresh air and heat in the middle of winter and sod the fossil fuels.

(By the way I hope you appreciate the é - it required some quite dextrous typing on my laptop, but I know you’re a stickler for correct grammar)
