Being boring

Wanadoo finally decided to email me yesterday and officially inform me they’re the new owners and brandname for my ISP Freeserve. I’d read a few articles in The Register about the takeover and it didn’t really concern me all that much until Wanadoo confirmed their intention to introduce usage caps:

  1. £17.99 a month for a 512K connection capped at 2Gb;

  2. £27.99 a month for a 512K connection capped at 15Gb [this is the tariff I’ve been on to date, but without the cap];

  3. £34.99 a month for a 1Mb connection capped at 30Gb.

As a fairly bandwidth-heavy user I wasn’t too happy about suddenly having my usage capped, but actually I have no real idea of my monthly bandwidth usage levels; 15Gb doesn’t sound like very much to me though.

Being a bit bored and slightly hungover this morning [and being the type of person who does this anyway and tries to blame it on being bored and slightly hungover] I read through the updated Terms of Use, and I’m very glad I did:

2.13
The monthly Usage Allowances do not apply to you unless you subscribe to a Wanadoo Broadband Service on or after 28 April 2004. If you register for the Service or Re-grade on or after 28 April 2004, Usage Allowances will apply to your new Service.

Doubtless this will change in the not-so-distant future, but for now: yay to no caps on my bandwidth usage!

Now what you need to do is monitor your usage in case the crafty buggers cap it without telling you!

Re #1: They’d better not, not when I’m downloading the 4.1Gb version of Night of the Living Dead! [Thanks Richard for the link — I’d have never had thought you could get it legitimately. :)]
