Fuddland
We have:
Self-raising flour
Chapati flour
Wholemeal bread flour
Not a single particle of plain flour though. So in completely the opposite spirit of Shrove Tuesday [that is, using up ingredients traditionally given up for Lent] I’ll have to go and buy some plain flour so I can use it up making pancakes. [And then, of course, give up flour again for the duration of Lent.]

Quarantine Day Three - Pancake Day. [weyoftheweb]. Excerpt: Yes, I have officially moved Pancake Day to Wednesday 25th, Shrove Wednesday from this day forward. Browsing the blogs yesterday I found out from pencil that it was pancake day. Damn! Why does pancake day always manage to slip past...

Wow, I haven’t made pancakes for, oh, err, about 15 years or more. I’ve forgotton how to make them. Mix stuff and cook it in a pan is about all I can remember!

Re #1: Well tonight’s a good night to start again! Try Meg’s standard recipe, it’s as almost as simple as you remember!
[The serving suggestion is important: get those savoury fillings outta here!]
I’m at the “leaving to stand” stage, which I’ve never actually understood. Perhaps whilst I’m waiting, I can try and find out why…

Stop the press! Delia doesn’t say to leave the batter to stand, so that’s completely shattered the — as we must now call it — urban legend. I’m following her from now on; I just have to find out precisely how much kitchen paper is in a wodge.

That recipe really is jolly good, but there’s a slight problem; I lack 2 of the 4 required ingredients. I have no flour and I have no eggs. Oh, and how much is a “cup”, isn’t that some freaky American measure. I mean, really, I have cups that contain 0.33 to 0.5 of a litre, which is it?! I’ll buy some ingredients and make some at the weekend. :o)

Re #4: Yeah, one cup equals eight fluid ounces, which equals 8.32673844 Imperial fluid ounces — so I needed quite a fine scale on my measuring jug to follow the recipe. ;)

Well, I bought some ingredients, but would you believe I coulnd’t find any jif lemon stuff in Sainsbury’s I had to go into (yeuch) Tesco to get some.

Re #6: Sainsbury’s were out of real lemons too? Or is it Jif Lemon or nothing? ;)
Phil | 2004 / 02 / 28 – 15:03
You know, real lemons didn’t actually occur to me! We always used to use the Jif stuff when I was a lad, so that’s what was stuck in my mind.
