Brrr

As I briefly mentioned in a comment, we went out for a bite to eat earlier today; the walk there and back was seriously cold. It had stopped snowing but the wind was so biting, any exposed flesh [really only our faces] constantly had its heat whipped away from it.

Jackets and the several layers below them did a good job insulating our bodies, and thick socks and boots kept out the snow, but our legs suffered even through jeans — it felt as if the blood in our thighs had frozen. After a while things became so numb it didn’t matter so much, but we’ll definitely try to limit how often and far we have to walk whilst it’s this cold.

On a more personal level, I was particularly thankful not have been born into certain faiths that have a tradition of removing a certain protective covering of a certain, ahem, sensitive area. [Apparently, in this country, it’s not a practice restricted to a few faiths — it’s done as a matter of routine. Poor guys!]

Something that didn’t occur to me to bring was sunglasses — I’d always thought wearing them at any time of the year other than June or July to September was fairly ridiculous, but I’ve changed my mind after getting back to the apartment this afternoon and being able to see nothing but a big green blob in the centre of my vision for about ten minutes, having stared at basically nothing but an expanse of bright white snow for the entire walk home.

I’d suggest getting a pair of sunglasses asap - sun-blindness is a real and dangerous condition - can lead to more temporary visual problems - take care mate!
