Fuddland

New year, new-look weblog, new travel destination later on today as I fly out to one of the American midwest states for a short holiday. Despite the news that it’s freakishly warm over there at the moment, extra layers have been packed as Weather.com predicts consistently negative temparatures for the next week or so. Given the warning that, “it gets so cold your snot freezes”, I’m hoping to see proper snow for the first time in years; my trips to Canada and New England have always been during the milder months of the year, and it would be kind of a strange masochistic treat for me to have to trudge through the snow unable to feel my toes. [You watch: the freak heatwave will continue, whilst the whole of England disappears under a six-foot snowdrift.]

Due to the impending long flight on top of my usual reticence to make a big deal of it, last night’s New Year celebrations were even lower in key than usual — just a few drinks at a friend’s place, a fairly lively bar but nothing special, and I took advantage of the all-night free tube travel, chatting to some drunk Australian and Spanish people for most of the way home.

Just a few last-minute items to pack [come on tumble-drier!] and the journey will commence with the tube ride along most of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. My next entry will be from a whole other continent!

That tube ride out to Heathrow on the Picadilly line is so slow and demoralising! I only did it the once, and ended up using other methods after that. You have my sympathies! Oh, and happy new year, and all that…
